My Emotional Support Anime

Whether you believe it or not, even this gremlin has bad days- days where I’m sick, or I realize I actually should’ve put gas in the car the day before, and even days where it’s just rough to be a human. Or really bad days where I overhear someone in the manga section of Barnes…

Whether you believe it or not, even this gremlin has bad days- days where I’m sick, or I realize I actually should’ve put gas in the car the day before, and even days where it’s just rough to be a human. Or really bad days where I overhear someone in the manga section of Barnes and Noble loudly discussing story spoilers (yes, this really happened and yes, I made a very loud and passive aggressive comment).

On days like these, the remedy to my woes is wrapping up in a blanket and rewatching my comfort anime- Haikyuu! Nothing keeps depression away like the Burnout Syndromes’ FLY HIGH!, the sound of sneakers on gym floors, and watching my boys play volleyball. The combination of friendship, teamwork, and a collective push to watch everyone grow draws me in and keeps me in a chokehold. A warm and very comfortable chokehold.

There’s a special combination of things that make up a comfort anime:

  • An amazing intro and outro song and sequence
  • Stakes that are NOT life and death
  • Wholesome relationships
  • Characters who strive to (and actually get to) reach their goals
  • A sense of nostalgia and escapism that carries you out of the present and into the story

No matter how many times you’ve watched it, your comfort anime can never get old. Loading it up on your favorite screen is like reuniting with your best friend after a while apart.

So now I have to know:

What’s your comfort anime?

What show do you put on when life has offended you? The one where you know every line by heart, but rewatch anyway. Let me know in the comments- I’m always looking for something new to add to my watchlist.
